Bodum Fondue Set

Bodum fondue set

Are you contemplating the purchase of a Bodum fondue set? Make sure to read the information posted below before making your decision.

As per all fondue sets, this particular fondue pot has great qualities and potential flaws that may be important to you, especially when considering its relatively high price tag.

Review of Bodum Fondue Set

Bodum is probably better known for its coffee makers and French coffee presses than its fondue pots. Bodum is a family-owned Danish company that was founded in 1944 with the goal of offering functional, well-designed, high-quality and affordable kitchen products. You can view an assortment of Bodum products here.

If you glanced through the list of products shown with the previous link, you'll realize the fondue pots are NOT one of their most popular products, but I have to say that this Bodum fondue set looks great, as per all their products. Based on information available at the time this page was published (April 2012), it appears that Bodum has stopped making this product, but you may still encounter some Bodum fondue sets on the market, whether new or used.

The Bodum fondue set is quite attractive. I particularly like their unique fondue forks. Instead of using "color-coded" forks (like most manufacturers make), they created forks with square handles that end with a die face (one fork has 1 dot, another 2 dots, another 3 dots, etc.) so the 6 forks that come with the pot give you the full assortment of faces you'd find on a regular die.

This fondue set also comes with a glass insert (to use when making cheese or chocolate/dessert fondue). This glass insert can be used in the microwave (to melt your cheese a little faster and save fondue fuel) and can also be put in the freezer. Nothing should stick to this glass insert and all parts go in the dishwasher, so it should make the cleaning process easier!

fondue gel insert

This fondue set also comes with a gel burner that will require gel refills like the Trudeau gelled fuel fondue capsules (shown on the right).

Gel fuel can also be purchased in bottles like the Trudeau fondue fuel gel in a hardware store, grocery store (look for it near the BBQ equipment) or any kitchen store.

Complaints About the Bodum Fondue Set

When compared to other not so stylish fondue pots, the Bodum fondue set will appear overly expensive. However, if good design is a must, then you should be ready to pay for it.

This particular fondue pot is higher than most, which means that, depending on how you set up your table, your guests may need to stand up to see what's going on with their forks (or to untangle them when doing hot oil/broth fondue). I'm fairly short myself, so I'm used to having to do it every now and then. However, if you intend on having children using this pot, it's something to keep in mind, and I would recommend using a wider and lower pot such as the Cuisinart CFO-3SS Electric Fondue Maker.

Because this fondue set requires "gel" fuel instead of "denatured alcohol", it will work great for chocolate and cheese, but you may find that the heat isn't high enough for broth or oil fondue. You can always use Sterno canisters, which may bring your flame closer to the pot, thereby increasing the heat (only for oil or broth, the burner that comes with the set works great for cheese and chocolate fondue).
